What to Do for Baby Acne: The Do's and The Dont's

Baby acne is common skin condition on baby that often happens after several weeks of birth. What to do for baby acne for a mom to do is to be patient. The acne will eventually breaks away as the hormone in baby becomes stable again. Though acne on baby skin appear just like common acne in teens and adults, unless it is not because of allergy or other skin conditions, acne on baby does not need intense care like acne cream or facial since baby skin is so sensitive and fragile. Here is the do's and don't's every mom should know in treating baby acne.
Do's
- Wash the baby's face with mild baby soap and warm water once in a day. Gently pat the face and let it dry. Apply non-oil cream and baby powder to soothe baby's skin.
- In treating acne on baby, drink plenty of water to better the quality of the breast milk. The quality of the breast milk will affect t the rejuvenation of the baby skin.
- Clean the baby clothes and make sure to use clothes from soft material only. Also clean the sleeping place of the baby.
- Have patience. Acne on baby is generally harmless and is a normal condition. The acne will eventually break away once the hormone in baby becomes normal again.
Don't's
- Don't scrub the baby skin. This is the wrong thing to do to treat baby acne. Acne on baby is not caused by dirt but rather because of the hormone transferred by mother to the baby after the birth. Scrubbing the skin of the baby will only lead to irritation.
- Don't use over the counter acne medicine. Babies are unlike teenagers or adults that can resist the side effects of medicine, much less an over the counter acne medicine.
- What should be avoided in baby acne is applying oil lotion on the baby skin. The oil will cause clogged pores and make the acne even worse. There may be certain non oil cream that helps to cure baby acne. However, don't trust too much on it and monitor the effects of it in skin complexion.
